Georgia has saved up her allowance and birthday money for quite some time. She has had her little red wallet with a colorful peace sign on it in the entry table drawer slowly collecting dollars for at least a year. In fact, we forgot all about her wallet (thus making it difficult to actually spend those dollars).
Georgia decided she wanted to add Josefina to her American Girl collection. She took a birthday trip to the American Girl store in CA with Nani, and met up with Molly and Mimi, and came home with Kaya. She received her Molly doll for Christmas. After much deliberation (and scouring the pages of the catalog), Georgia decided Josefina was pretty cool.
For several nights, we would talk about "jobs" she could do to earn money. Putting away her and Charlie's laundry for the week, for example, earns her $3. "Babysitting" Charlie while I take a shower banks her another buck. Those little things seem trivial, but they make my life a whole lot easier. Win win.
Georgia and I calculated how much money she needed to reach her goal. Every day we would do the math; closer and closer she got. Then one day, last week, and after finding that cute little wallet, we figured out she had just enough money to buy her girl! So, we whipped out the computer and searched the website to find Josefina. Georgia thought her goat was pretty neat (and proceeded to tell me the story of it that she read in the Josefina book we had checked out from the library). I told her that for her birthday I will buy the goat.
When we got home from the club this afternoon, I noticed a brown box on the front porch, and I knew just what it was. I couldn't wait for Georgia to get home from school. I just couldn't wait to see her excitement!
And there was certainly some excitement when she walked through the door! She didn't even waste time taking off her backpack. She tore into that box so quickly, picked Josefina up, introduced her to Kaya and Molly (BLESS her heart), and continued upstairs with her girls to play.
I've never seen this girl more happy. The thing I like most of all is I know she is proud of herself. She earned the doll. It is hers and she bought it herself. With her very own money. I love it! Good lesson learned!
